The underground Camerano

Far few kms from Ancona, set in the natural environment of Conero Park, you will find out Camerano. It was one of Ancon castles and it was used as defensive line of Conero area, together with the castles of Sirolo, Varano, Poggio and Massignano. Camerano fame is due to its caves, an extraordinary system of underground tunnels dug in sandstone, communicating among them and crossing beneath the village centre.

In the sets of the “secret” Camerano there are numerous bas-reliefs, architectonical decorations, friezes, decorative patterns and religious symbols attesting a civilian, ritual, and defensive use (in 1944 it was used as shelter for people escaping from bombing). Someone is thinking also of a presence of Templar Knights.
The Mancinforte cave – Ricotti cave – Perugini and Gaspari caves – Corraducci caves.
Visiting Camerano on the first week of September, we advise you a folk fair set up in 1995: it is the “Festa del Rosso Conero” (Conero Red Wine Fair), mix of classic fair exalting grapes and wine and an amazing generations meeting linked to events, typicality and good cuisine. The first week end of September all inhabitants of Camerano cheers with Conero red wine.
